So Omar deleted this tweet b/c of backlash. Cruz's response to the deleted tweet below:
Ted Cruz ? @tedcruz As the son of a Cuban immigrant whose Dad came to get a math degree & become a computer programmer, I’m troubled that Dems seem to believe Hispanic immigrants can’t qualify for skills-based legal immigration. Bringing in more scientists, engineers & doctors is good for US jobs.
Image of Omar tweet converted to text:
A "merit based" immigration policy is fueled by racism towards the Latinx community. Our immigration policies shouldn't be based on discrimination, fear, or bigotry. We should welcome immigrants to our country and offer a simple pathway to citizenship.
thoughts? microaggression on her part or no? good intention, but poor word choice? misinterpretation of her message by conservatives?
My thought is that if someone uses race as a basis for argument, it's a racist action no matter which direction the argument is being taken. I know Omar is trying to show that she is inclusive, but to argue that a merit-based immigration system is racist to Latin-American immigrants is a pretty racist observation, essentially suggesting that Latin-American immigrants are somehow unable to compete based on merit.
I see that point as well, which makes me think her comment is a microaggression. I dislike that term, by the way, as it's overused. But in this case, it's applicable. So many people here praise Canada, which has merit-based immigration - https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/16/politics/merit-based-immigration-explainer/index.html
Countries like Australia and Canada have skills-based systems. Australia and Canada both use point-based systems to determine if someone qualifies to enter the country as a skilled worker. In Canada, for example, applicants earn points based on language skills, education, work experience age, adaptability and whether they have a job waiting for them.
I think she speaks before thinking. She's impulsive, and when you don't allow yourself time to process your thoughts, sometimes the "truth" does come out.
