Trump decided IRS refunds will be issued... https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/white-house-rules-it-can-issue-tax-refunds-during-shutdown-plans-to-bring-back-some-irs-employees/2019/01/07/c1dfafc8-12c0-11e9-b6ad-9cfd62dbb0a8_story.html?utm_term=.d4e699c3cff5
Does this mean IRS workers will be working without pay?
Well, I think it’s likely a bunch of lawsuits will result. So who knows if they’ll be forced to work without pay? Assuming they can even get anyone to come back to work. You have to understand that these are seasonal employees. A season at the IRS can be anything from 3 months to all year depending on a variety of things including but not limited to seniority and workload. Some of these employees may have been released last June and worked another job or are taking care of kids/grandkids. A lot of retired people work at these places as something to do for a few months out of the year (such as opening mail) and as a way to make some extra money. You might have some trouble getting someone that’s not working and not being paid to come back for tax season to work and not be paid.
