I have no idea who is likely to get the nomination in 2020, but Sanders and Warren supporters are delusional if they think either one of them can win a general election, even against Trump. The vast majority of Americans are absolutely not going to vote for a "Socialist," and if even you don't think that's what Sanders and Warren are, I can guarantee you that's exactly what they will be in the eyes of the electorate by the time the GOP is done with them.
I am not sure how many people you think are required to make a "vast majority" but at least 90%, of Clinton voters have already decided to vote for the Democrat, even it's Karl Marx himself. There are probably another 5% or so of Trump voters who hated both Clinton and Trump, but would vote for almost any other Democrat. "Socialist" is just not the kiss of death it used to be. On the other hand, Trump has lost enough voters in some swing states to make his path to victory even narrower than 2016.
Yes, this is spot on. The bad thing Republican liars have done by sticking centrists like Obama with the socialist label, is that now Americans can't differentiate between real socialism Bernie-style, and Liz Warren's more regulated-market approach, which would be called Democratic Socialism in Europe. And those Republican lies were not just coming from their propaganda media mouthpieces, even Mitt Romney the supposed grown-up was shouting the S-word at Obama.
Someone has been lying to you. Democratic Socialism doesn't exist in Europe as a mainstream parry -- what those folks represent we'd call Communist or Anarchist over here. What is strong here is Social Democracy, which is essentially what Bill Clinton did very successfully in the 90s (other than his private matters, of course) and that Obama the Ideologue much ignored to his peril and to the peril of the Democrats who losed so much state and local power from 2008 to 2016 and beyond.
OK, I inadvertently flipped the words. I stand by my overall point, which is that American aren't going to vote for anyone who describes themselves as a "socialist" in any way, because as a group they literally are incapable of distinguishing between Western European-style welfare state socialism and totalitarian communism.
