The fact that there is 43!pages of Wootton complaining about getting a new HS along with other outside complaining about the same should tell the superintendent all he needs to know. These people are unserious and clearly not in need of a new facility. Start with Damascus and Magruder as the CIP proposes, move the boundaries to fill the school. If that means Wootton is now split, then so be it.
Why is the only serious way to demonstrate that Wootton needs renovation to close it and move students to Crown? No other school has been presented with such an extreme and unfair option. If this proposal were applied to other schools, the reaction would be immediate and overwhelmingly negative. This thread has many trolls defending this option who are deeply invested as it effectively transfers the asset from other neighborhoods to their neighborhoods.
The you need to stop demanding being bumped to the front of the line. You got the new school. Other schools are already in much worse shape. I’d be thrilled to be offered a new school.
Please provide citations for this. Wootton families are asking for remediation of immediate problems, not a full renovation. Wootton is on the CIP for 2035 (after being bumped twice). That demonstrates Wootton families are patient. They just don't want to move to Crown. Why can't you understand this (you probably do understand, but you're trolling). Are you suggesting that remediation isn't even a possibility due to lack of funds? If this were the case, then Crown's construction should cease immediately because there is no need for a brand new school costing $400M that will be under enrolled. While you're at it, go ahead and halt all CIP for full renovations and focus on simple remediation of existing buildings. That would save MCPS hundreds of millions of dollars. Oh, and no more renovation of sports fields or facilities. Those are a luxury if you can't remediate mold, HVAC, gas lines, etc.... in schools that need it.
What are the only immediate problems that Wootton wants to be remediated with all of the petitions out there? Do you have a list? Are those immediate problems costing millions or just a few thousands or hundred thousands here and there? If those immediate problems cost a lot of money and current Wootton can still open to operate, MCPS probably would want to wait until the full renovation in 2035. Sometimes it is just faster and cheaper to tear up the building and build a new one.
They don't care about logic. They demanded a new building, got one offerend and now are complaining as its not what they wanted. If MCPS is doing a full renovation in 10 years, thats more than most schools are getting.
