Week 3 -2024 VA Boys Class 6 Rankings 1. Robinson (4-0) Results: Def. McLean 6-5, Def. Alexandria City 14-0, Def. Langley 13-6 Analysis: Robinson went down to the wire against McLean, eking out a one-goal win. They beat the Titans as expected, and then stomped Langley in a game that never felt close. Their defense is shining as they held both Yorktown and McLean to five goals apiece and Langley to six. It is not the prettiest lacrosse but the Rams are athletic and fight for every ground ball. They usually push themselves a bit more over Spring Break, but after a tough lead-in week they scheduled just one easy game against Faquier. This Week: 3/27 vs. Faquier 2. Madison (3-1) Results: Def. Westfield 17-3, Def. Yorktown 7-6 (OT) Analysis: Madison got in a 3-0 hole against Yorktown after getting shut out in the first half, due to some unreal goaltending by the Patriots netminder. As usual, they made some adjustments at halftime and found a way to break through, taking control at the faceoff X and applying constant pressure. Madison has the toughest Spring Break of any team, facing MD 4A powerhouse Broadneck, who went 17-0 last year (including a win over DeMatha), and MD private Severn School, who sits 4-1 and beat St. Albans with ease. They probably walk away with two losses but the coaches hope that playing tough competition will keep the Warhawks hungry. A win in either game would be a real statement. This Week: 3/25 @ Broadneck, 3/27 vs. Severn School 3. McLean (3-1) Results: Lost to Robinson 6-5, Def. Centreville 18-4, Def. Bishop O’Connell 13-6 Analysis: McLean took Robinson to the limit, playing outstanding defense and keeping the Rams in check, despite missing their star goalie. Great performance by the Highlanders, who looked slightly better than Yorktown in their loss to the Rams, leading to them leapfrogging the two-loss Patriots. As expected, the Highlanders took care of business against Centreville and O’Connell. The close one-goal loss Robinson looks better with Yorktown’s three-goal loss and Langley’s seven-goal loss to the Rams. McLean has one Spring Break game against a Woodson team that they should beat without breaking a sweat. This Week: 3/25 vs. Woodson 5. Yorktown (2-2) Results: Lost to Madison 7-6 (OT), Def. Oakton 9-5 Analysis: Yorktown lost a tough battle with Madison, again playing stout defense but struggling to put in goals. They are now averaging only 5.5 goals/game against top competition. They took down Oakton but it was a very close game, with only one goal separating the teams until the Patriots stepped on the gas in the fourth quarter. The defense looks stout but Yorktown needs to find more answers on offense. Yorktown decided to take Spring Break off and has no games until April. This Week: No games 5. Battlefield (2-0) Results: No games Analysis: Battlefield did not play and their schedule shows them with a full month off before their next game on 4/15. This Week: No games 6. Langley (2-1) Results: Def. Westfield 18-2, 3/23 @ Robinson Analysis: Langley cruised against a weak Westfield squad. They seemed to think it was Spring Break and did not appear to show up against Robinson. The Rams were more physical and the Saxons looked outmatched. There has been a lot of talk about Langley being a contender but they have the most work to do of the top six teams to get back into the conversation. It doesn’t get any easier for Langley as they scheduled two more brutal matchups over Spring Break, traveling to Maryland to face South River and then take on reigning Maryland 4A State Champs Broadneck. As with Madison, Langley could take two Ls this week but need to keep the games close. This Week: 3/25 vs. South River (@Broadneck), 3/27 vs. Broadneck (@ West Potomac) 7. Cosby (2-0) Results: Def. Powhatan 15-1 Analysis: Another easy win for Cosby. Huge showdown this week with an Atlee team that crushed Blue Ridge School 11-5, a team that went on to beat PVI. Atlee should win fairly easily and Cosby would do well to keep it as close as the 14-7 loss they took to Atlee last season. This Week: 3/25 @ Atlee, 3/27 vs. Midlothian 8. Oakton (3-1) Results: Def. Washington-Liberty 11-2, Lost to Yorktown 9-5 Analysis: The Cougars continued to roll against lower competition but met their match when they ran into Yorktown. Still, Oakton played Yorktown tough and was in the game until the middle of the fourth quarter. Good defense and goaltending was the hallmark of the effort. Oakton has Spring Break off and comes back to a string of easily winnable games. A very attainable 7-1 start could lead to them moving up the rankings ahead of Cosby and Langley. This Week: No games 9. Freedom South Riding (3-0) Results: Def. Lightridge 14-7, Def. Dominion 8-7 Analysis: Two wins gets the Eagles off to a nice 3-0 start before Spring Break. Closer than expected game with a down Dominion squad led to Freedom dipping slightly in the rankings. They better not take too much time off because they return to face Briar Woods and then Riverside and will need to be sharp to avoid taking two losses. This Week: No games 10. Hayfield (3-0) Results: Def. Chantilly 12-5 Analysis: Hayfield took down arguably their toughest opponent of the season, beating Chantilly with ease. They get a long two week layoff and then settle into the easiest schedule of any team in the top-10. It will be tough to dislodge Hayfield from the rankings because they are unlikely to lose until the playoffs. This Week: No games Also Considered: Patriot, West Potomac, Woodson
