Another new VB parent here chiming in. After reading this thread, I'm sure there's been miscommunication regarding club/team top/competitive/tier, offers/preselect means. Is it really a tryout or money grab? As well as how much things cost. Parents really do come here for information from more experienced parents. I can also concur with a previous post. I was at a Metro Regional tryout and heard a coach say we only have a few spots left. Whatever you call that, I'll leave it up to the veteran parents or coaches.
I believe that the most prestigious clubs use the tryouts as a money grab. They already have most of their teams made of players "graduating" to the next age level. They will not offer spots to some players who do not fit the club culture (hard work / personality). The clubs also need to replace those who are looking for another team that better fits their interest: * they may decide to move to a more competitive team (they are looking for a challenge) * they may decide to move to a less competitive team (they are looking for more court time) * they may decide to move because of the club culture (work, personality, coaching style) * they may decide to stop playing (quite unusual) To sum it up, the prestigious clubs get a lot of money from unexperienced players who have no idea that they have no chance. As mentioned in another post, they only have a few spots to offer to outsiders. The less prestigious clubs try hard to maintain their rosters, so it is less of a money grab for them (plus, there are fewer players trying out).
