I don’t understand why anyone gets worked up over the idea that an institution designed by men, for the benefit of men, is not magically equally good for women. Why would we expect it to be?
I'm struggling to see how modern marriage is good for men in any way? What do men get out of it? It seems very beneficial for women though. They get legal access to husband's income, which is usually higher than theirs.
Free sex.
Free care of a home and possessions. Free cheerleader. Free Meal maker. Free cleaner. Free holiday maker. Free event planner. Free organizer. Free child bearer. Free child carer. Free friend maker. Free problem solver. Free emotional healer. Free money maker and/or money saver. Free friend.
My DH tells others when they ask him why he looks so good, and he says because I just have a happy life with my wife. And I have the same sentiment when I think about our marriage. When you find the right person you really do compliment and make each others life so much better. I do not see that often but I do know of couple, in addition to us, who have such harmony in they way they approach their marriage. No one is keeping score of who's cooking, cleaning, whatever, we just work well together and somehow everything magically gets done without fighting and constance conversations about the basics in life. Everyone has to eat, do laundry, clean the house, gas up the car, pick up a kid, take care of a pet, etc., I don't care who does what and neither does he, as long as it gets done and things are not neglected so it becomes overwhelming to one or both of us.
