Musk's MO is to go big and fail and then learn from the failure and adjust. Fail again, adjust. Rinse and repeat. It worked with his rockets and cars for the most part. It's probably not a good idea to run government that way.
I get all that but Musk also can make flawed decisions like insisting all vision is sufficient for safety when it may not be. That’s a “bet the farm” (or at least $billions in terms of tech investment and deployed product) decision that may not pan out. Look at the questions the Feds are asking re: what they actually intend to roll out in Austin. “Tesla’s robotaxi plans have the attention of federal investigators“ https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/12/teslas-robotaxi-plans-have-the-attention-of-federal-investigators/ If the answer needs to be “we need a whole new FSD software stack and/or augmented hardware to increase the autonomy level”, then the stock is in real trouble because of a bad bet on the farm. It seems like the Feds are skeptical that FSD/tech as it is can overcome things like poor visibility, in the case of Tesla without LiDAR can only be solved by the cameras, thanks to Musk. If that’s a “fail”, there is no fast adjust, rinse and repeat option for the whole Tesla fleet and all of its owners globally.
