I didn’t like the Beth episode at all. I love her and adore Zoe but this episode didn’t do anything for me for some reason.
I agree, I had zero emotional reaction to it. Beth's parents seemed already elderly during her child years. Her mother kept referring to these mystery older brothers and sisters who we never saw and Beth has never mentioned or had a relationship with otherwise (unless I'm forgetting things.) Perhaps part of what bothered me is that as a former professional dancer, tv shows wanting to portray the ballet world can never seem to get it right. None of the girls they had dancing in Bethany's childhood classes had the skill to make it anywhere near professional level. The adult Beth actress didn't look like she'd done a plie in her life before during her Flashdance moment. I get that this is fiction and we can use our imagination and suspend reality, but can't NBC afford to hire real dancers for their episodes??
You are not forgetting things. Unless I am forgetting things in season 1 didn't Beth William smoke weed together and she told him her uncle had cancer (no mention of her father) and before she met Randall she did not want children because she had to take care of a bunch of siblings growing up and when she left she was happy to have her own space and be alone. Zoe is a cousin and while she is younger, they don't appear to be too far apart in age. Also, by the way she said it, to me it implied that she grew up kind of poor. Her family was clearly middle class and where were all the siblings she was forced to practically raise? Suspect the show may be re-writing her story a bit.
I don't see inconsistencies. Beth has spoken about her sisters before a couple of times. She said there were 11 people in their house, parents, 4 siblings, cousins (and maybe grandparents). She also told William about her father's lung cancer and the weed when she baked those brownies. They showed her putting together a memory box with her daughters before William passed just like she had done for her father (including a menu from a restaurant in Jamaica). No mention of an uncle, except about Zoe's father (who I think was married to Beth's aunt).
