The point is that they have been posing as holier-than-thou warriors of Christ who have the gall to use their fame to promote discriminatory policies that interfere with other people's lives, to put it mildly. It's because of people like them that gay kids commit suicide at four times the rate of heterosexual kids and that the Matthew Shephards of this world get strung up on barbed wire to die like pigs at a butcher's stall.
