It pains me to see this topic devolve into a competition of which ethnic/racial group has had it worse over time. The OP brought this topic up for discussion from a place of kindness, and a desire for healing. With all that has happened in this country in the past month, now is the time to discuss reparations and elimination of the wealth gap. Yes, it may pain the privileged and fragile whites in the US to realize that they were unwittingly supporting (and benefiting from) racist societal structures. This racism was baked in and they may not have been aware of how oppressive these institutions have been over time. But now is the time to look behind the curtain and expose the rot resulting from undeserved privilege. It is time to correct these wrongs, as well as incorrect thoughts. That being done, we can focus on the necessary tasks of reparations and closing the wealth gap. We have the opportunity in 127 days to rid ourselves of a reactionary national government, and to replace it with one that will get started with reparations and other necessary progressive changes that this country needs. To squelch the subject of reparations at such a time is, frankly, the wrong thing to do. In fact, it would be racist to sweep it under the rug now. We have the momentum, the votes and the desire to correct the wrongs of the past. We have the opportunity to marginalize racists and white privilege. The wind is at our backs. Let us unite behind Biden and restore the Obama-era Age of Enlightenment in the United States. Aside from electing Biden, the most meaningful thing we can do as a country to show proof of our sincerity is to begin the long overdue payment of reparations, and to take other meaningful efforts to correct the wealth gap. It reads like a joint communique from the Ministry of Truth and the Ministry of Love.
There are other things that can be done instead of setting up an ATM machine.
