I understand devoting time and effort into a sport that might help you get into a better school than you otherwise would, but pursuing the sport at a LESSER college than you could get into masses no sense - UNLESS you view the sport as a career option.
It only makes sense if the student has lousy grades and test scores and no other options. I've seen talented athletes (elite level, nationally recognized) from Big 3 schools accepted at ivies with pretty low SAT scores (3.0 range gpas).
It would not be the path I would take, but I have definitely seen student-athletes pass up more highly rated colleges for the chance to play at a higher level (I can remember my office mate's soccer-playing daughter choosing Syracuse over Cornell, for example, and I've seen kids pick UVA for lacrosse over the Ivies, because they want to play for a national championship). I have also seen students pass up NESCAC schools with excellent academic reputations for Division I options. Sometimes money comes into it, although generally scholarships for non-revenue sports (such as lacrosse) are partial at best. Every case is honestly different -- if you don't know the families you can't divine what's going on from just looking at matriculation list.
