Duke has a 12 Billion Dollar endowment.  Even at 5% interest that is $600 million per year in interest.  On top of that, full pay families at Duke like the kid we are talking about will have a total estimated four year total cost of attendance at 372K.  The fact that public funds are given to these private institutions is ridiculous.  Time for Duke and these other schools to cut the fat.[/quote]

2019 settlement for falsified research data

Misconduct: In 2019, Duke agreed to pay the U.S. government $112.5 million to settle a whistleblower lawsuit alleging that it knowingly submitted fraudulent data to obtain federal grants from the NIH and EPA.

Details: A former Duke lab analyst alleged that a researcher had falsified data regarding mouse lung function between 2006 and 2013.

Resolution: Duke paid the settlement but did not admit liability. It also implemented new oversight measures for its research practices.

Stop assuming all these institutions are being altruistic.  And yes, you can funnel more of these monies to the private sector or better yet, public universities.
