Clearly the status quo is untenable, but rather than have a rational discussion you all seem to jump to calling names.
Really, that would be Trump, sista. If the GOP hadn't, on multiple occasions over the last 30 years, killed immigration reform including more administrative judges, we wouldn't be here right now having this exchange.
Exactly! The problem is that people never want to invest in the actually important stuff: 1. More employees at all levels to process immigration claims AND more personnel to man the southern border IT WAS IN THE BILL. AND a very expensive wall that will help to keep out walk-ins. All at a pretty stupendous cost. Mexico, you there? 2. More employees at IRS. Studies have shown that additions to the IRS workforce generate multiple times more monies recovered than the additional cost of labor. Dept of Government Deficiency said no. 2 can fund 1. But do we do this? No, because the left doesn't want to hear about pushing out migrants, FALSE and the right doesn't want to hear about processing immigration claims quickly or recovering taxes from GOP delinquents. TRUE We've got to work together, people!
We? Let’s take a long look back… Republicans have been unwilling to act on comprehensive immigration reform for nearly two decades. 2024: House Republicans were handed a bipartisan reform bill written by their own conservative Senator (Lankford). Trump “encouraged” senators to kill-the-bill so he he campaign on immigration. 2023: House Republicans voted against border security funding in FY22 and FY23 and a supplemental request for border security funds 2021: House Republicans refused to act on immigration reform bills that would have protected DACA holders, Temporary Protected Status immigrants, and undocumented farmworkers. Senate Republicans also blocked these bills. 2017: Mitch McConnell and Republicans could have rewritten immigration law but didn't, choosing to criticize the Obama administration's handling of DACA instead. Also, McConnell publicly stated “he’d make sure Obama was a one term president.” That didn’t happen. Old, miserable racist with egg an his face. (Name calling🚨) 2013: Obama’s 2nd term— A proposal passed the Senate 68 to 32 with strong bipartisan support. (🚨) Alcoholic Speaker John Boehner refused to bring it to the floor for a vote because a majority of House Republicans weren’t going to give a black president the win. * Congressional Republicans have refused to engage in meaningful policy changes on immigration since passing the Secure Fence Act in 2006. * Congressional Republicans use immigration as a political weapon to divide the American people * Congressional Republicans shifted to restrictionist and xenophobic rhetoric after the rise of the Tea Party movement * Congressional Republicans prefer running on rhetoric rather than adopting a platform on immigration * Congressional Republicans prefer enforcing existing laws and addressing border security before considering broader reform. I dunno. So many sources. Brookings is legit. https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-collapse-of-bipartisan-immigration-reform-a-guide-for-the-perplexed/#:~:text=Galston-,William%20A.,Zilkha%20Chair%20in%20Governance%20Studies&text=The%20last%20comprehensive%20immigration%20reform,2025%20to%20address%20border%20security.
Great post, but it omits the several attempts going back to Reagan where the GOP refused to act.
It’s in the Brookings link. I got distracted by the LA escalation. I was praying this wouldn’t happen.
