I no longer care that TJ changed its admission policy or that the ranking dropped to 14. But it is annoying for people to claim that TJ is stronger when objective measures show that it is not. More diverse, yes. But certainly not more competitive.
TJ is less competitive than in past years. Overall, it is academically weaker. No one should express surprise TJ’s ranking has fallen from first to 14th place.
TJ isn’t usually #1. The rankings are volatile because the infinitesimal differences between the top schools. 2015 #1 2016 #1 2017 #2 2018 #1 2019 #1 2020 #2 2021 #1 (admissions changed from merit to equity lottery) 2022 #1 2023 #5 2024 #14
2025 #??
Now that the selection process has been fixed to prevent the faux-gifted kids from buying their way in, I suspect TJ will be back on top. It's also more diverse at least not just the kids from a few wealthy schools and also less toxic.
Everything can be reverse-engineered, but the only way TJ returns to being on top is if the evaluation criteria are rewired specifically to reward TJ for its own "experience factors. Otherwise the slide will continue.
