We are a family of 6. All except the little one are vaxxed. DW and I will continue masking in stores as long as our youngest isn't vaccinated.
Going to stores is an awfully low-risk activity. What do you during activities that involve higher-risk exposures, such as family gatherings, daycare, and school? Work might be another another, depending on what you do.
Why do you care? MYOB and STFU about it. Stop lecturing people (and that goes both ways). You don't NEED to understand their decisions. You don't NEED to explain your position to people. You don't NEED to engage at all on this issue. Just shut up.
It's interesting to see people get defensive about masking after the last two years. It's effectively been admitted that most masks we wore for two years did very little, which is surely one of the reasons why Fauci himself initially said it wasn't necessary  No one likes admitting they were lied to for a long time and based their behaviors and beliefs on what was barely anything more than speculation. Many people's responses to COVID became very political and part of their own identities and notion of self-worth.
I'm not defensive. I just can't stand when people don't MYOB. And spout off political talking points - which is exactly what your post and references to Fauci are and nothing more. You're not a scientist (clearly). You have no business commenting on the effectiveness of masks. My own feelings are that they do work for Covid, viruses in general, pollen, pollution. I've learned this through COVID as well as traveling in other countries where masking is generally accepted. But regardless of what you think of my reasons (and whether they are good ones or not) you're being a judgmental a$$hole over something that does not negatively affect you. Go maskless if you choose. You're allowed to do so. I don't really care if you get sick or not (from covid or something else) at this point. I don't care if YOU are defensive or guilty over your choice. I honestly don't think about you when I put my mask on. So I don't know why you're thinking about me. Please don't.
NP. Here’s an article from a very well regarded Covid cautious scientist on masks: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/10/commentary-what-can-masks-do-part-2-what-makes-good-mask-study-and-why-most I’m no longer bothering with a cloth mask but don’t care in the least if others feel better wearing them. I’ve stocked up on some N95s for the next wave but I am no longer engaging in theater.
