At least with the music teacher, they both have a love of music and, to some extent, a loving of teaching children, in common. As someone who is a music teacher at a school for the blind, he is probably going to do a better job dealing with Jack's blindess than Toby is. And since we know that music ends up being Jack's "thing," it's also obvious that all 3 of them will share the love of music and he will probably be a better mentor in that regard than Toby--just because Toby has no other experience dealing with the blind.

I wouldn't be surprised if the story line is that the teacher recognizes how truly gifted at music Jack is and helps him a lot. Kate may see that with the kids the teacher is not the rude acerbic person he is with adults. He will see what a great mom Kate is--he's probably dealt with a lot of parents of blind children who do a worse job. So, it may be that it is Jack who brings them together.
