Do Asian schools that have almost homogeneous student applicants base admissions solely on grades?
As in University of Beijing?
Yes, do they ever reject students with high grades in favor of someone who has a more interesting biography with lower grades? Regardless of how they define "interesting".
Anyone?
I can talk to Universities in India. They will laugh you off the campus if you claim you deserve a seat because you are more "interesting". All based on grades. They do have a big "quota" for what are considered "backward" people - the traditionally lower castes. However, much like here the system is now gamed where everyone other than the Brahmins claim "backwardness" in some shape or form and get in. AFAIK, China, Singapore, Europe all base admissions on academic merit, not some criteria someone dreams up to keep out, say Jews or Asians.
OK, so you are saying that in India, medical school admissions are based solely on grades? Anyone can get in if their grades are high enough? No interview?
Yes, only marks in various exams matter. And your caste is considered alongside your marks.
Wow. So a person could be a real sociopath and get into med school? Come to think of it, I know of many doctors from overseas who are people who put the dollar ahead of their patients. Also, I have noticed that they are seldom well rounded. Like few play instruments, or have childhood hobbies. Sad.
