I don't think anyone is cross-shopping Berkeley and U-Va. A Virginia resident who can get into and afford Berkeley's out-of-state tuition would likely get into G'Town, Hopkins, Duke, an Ivy, or Northwestern.[/quote]

It depends on the kid. I'm sure there are plenty of kids from Virginia who would chose Berkeley in a heartbeat over both UVA & most of the schools you listed.

And --apropos to nothing really -- Berkeley is probably as hard or harder to get into for non CA residents than all of the schools you mentioned except for the some of the ivys . It's definitely harder to get into Berkeley right now from out of state than it is to get into Hopkins or Georgetown.[/quote]
