Had a family member who lived in New Jersey where they train seeing eye dogs. Looong waiting list for the wash outs. We had a great rescue dog, but the last few times I've looked at shelters, they mostly had pit bulls and pit bull mixes. This idea that shelters are overflowing with great family pets is a bit of a myth. They are there, but a great many rescue dogs are there because they have issues. There are private rescues that comb the public shelters for the most adoptable dogs, and that's where we found our sweet boy, but finding a young dog with a good temperament isn't necessarily easy.
