How did the man in the first incident, who had a long rap sheet, have a legal handgun in his pocket?
Because traffic offenses don't stop you from owning a handgun but, Im all for making a law that does.
The Post said he had a longer rap sheet than that: "sterling has a criminal record going back two decades, including charges of burglary, domestic abuse, possessing marijuana, property damage, carnal knowledge of an adolescent and illegally carrying a handgun..." :(
Castile had no felony charges and 31 traffic violations, misdemeanors. The law also does not require that he inform the police he is carrying a gun he is licensed to carry either.
I have zero issue with Castile having a gun. He sounds law abiding. I dont know what the law says about informing the police you have a gun at a traffic stop, but it sounds like he did (which would be common sense). I have found all traffic stops to be very stressful for all parties and wonder what we can do to improve them - send a robot to get the id while the officer remains safely in car? It may need to come to that. Right now the fact that its humans interacting is dangerous sometimes for al colors, for drivers and police.
