[/quote] Perhaps you'll feel better if you stop treating a stylistic preference as if it were a rule of grammar. Or maybe closer reading will help. Note the use of "who" as well as "that" in the original sentence and how this variation enables the writer to distinguish an essential attribute (familiarity with a variety of schools) from an incidental one (friendship).[/quote]
