While European countries have a strong social safety net they are not "liberal" in the American sense. When I've travelled there, I'm always struck by how Republicans would identify with Europeans more because they they are not PC at all. They are blunt and say what they mean. They do not go through hoops & bounds to protect the rights of others. They are very common sense. They desire personal rights & hands-off government when it comes to those rights (smoking). There is no government telling you how to cross the street. No government ticketing you for speeding. Or leaving your baby sleeping on the sidewalk. In the countries I've travelled I've always felt there was a great freedom... and far less laws than we have here.
This is very true. They are NOT PC. In fact, they're the farthest thing from PC. It's very refreshing b/c they're honest. PC is just a way of hiding some ugly truths. So all the bad that should be exposed and addressed stays hidden under PC language. Furthermore, European nations are small and clearly love their culture. Adding more people to an already crowded space is bad enough. Adding a very different culture to the mix is destructive. I feel very sorry for Europeans. In fact, I think my father is rolling over in his grave watching what's happening to his country.
I feel sorry for Europeans as far as terrorism, no one should be subjected to that! As far as countries being subjected to foreigners and their unique cultures being changed, I have no sympathy. When Europeans were colonizing other countries and oppressing the people of those countries, they had no sympathy for the people they were oppressing. Many of the people invading Europe are from former colonies. We reap what we sow.
Then why do you travel to other countries? to embrace a different culture Why do people study abroad? same reason but also with the goal of FULLY learning another language Yes, the US is "unique" in that it's an amalgamation of cultures. great, I say - But we're large and can absorb this constant change better than most simply because of our size. The irony on these threads is fascinating to me. We are always preaching about appreciating other cultures in the US - valuing what they bring to our country, yet we'll bash European countries for being "too nationalistic."
