DS (9 in three weeks) just started the first Harry Potter book. Most recently he read “The Magician’s Nephew” by C.S. Lewis and has read most of the Roald Dahl books. Chapter books are a struggle, as his attention span isn’t great. He much rather read a non-fiction book (favorites are the Knowledge Encyclopedia, Weird but True, and Ripley’s Believe it or Not). I appreciate his interested in non-fiction, but I’m trying to push for him to read more novels.
These are really tough books. The syntax and vocabulary in them is quite challenging (also they are both British authors, which makes them even more difficult for an American reader.). Try something a little simpler, like maybe the baseball card time travel books by Dan Gutman, or James Pattersons treasure hunter books. Something contemporary and written by an American will be an easier lift and help him get into fiction.
