Boy has this thread derailed. I came on to see how much teen DS should charge given the huge amounts of snow. Our neighborhood is full of elderly, mostly retired military and it is evident they live on large retirements. They can certainly pay for the service and seem happy to see teens who want to earn some money. I see no reason kids should work so hard for free just because someone is old. Now if they truly can't afford it, then that's another story. I would expect them to offer a token amount or a hot drink or something. It's nice to repay with some gratitude on both sides.
OP here. I agree :( I think some people are getting stir crazy and crabby today. My kids spent about three plus hours this morning shoveling the older lady's house. My husband had to help him with the end of the driveway after the plows came through because it was about three feet and hard there. I did our driveway with my husband and it took us a couple of hours together. It was very heavy, hard labor today. If I were paying a neighborhood teen to shovel today, I would give at least forty dollars, rounded up to fifty with a tip. My kid wants to ask for just five dollars because he feels badly that he was not strong enough to do it all himself like he usually does. We will probably come up with a number in between. Having shoveled today, this is way more work than even the foot we got last year. There is no shame with a kid accepting pay today from a neighbor who specifically approached him about hiring him to do this labor for them.
