Op here. I have purchased my base layer pants and top. When I get dressed for the slopes, do I need another sweatshirt or anything on top of the base layers like a mid layer before I put on my big ski jacket?
Depends on the weather, your ski jacket, and your body temp. My DS and DH generally just wear just a base layer top. I wear a sweater or another layer on top of my base layer and vary the two layers depending on the weather. My jacket is a Kjus and is quite warm so I don't need too much. It sounds like you are going to look like a giant snowball with all the clothes you are talking about. You need to resist the temptation to add lots of bulky layers. Skiing is an active sport and you need to be able to move, plus you don't want to be sweating all day. You don't want bulky jackets, heavy sweatshirts, multiple pairs of pants, etc. Dress for the weather, which can be variable. I wear - smart wool long johns, ski pants, thin quarter zip smart wool base layer, second layer that might be another quarter zip or maybe a thin fleece, ski jacket, ski socks and gloves, plus helmet and goggles. Gaiter if is cold enough (maybe 1/2 the time). I have skied in weather from -20 to 60 degrees so will add or subtract clothes depending on weather. If it's warm I drop the base layers, and/or wear a lighter jacket. If it's cold I add a cashmere turtleneck.
