Pp here who said 21 unless enlisted, and that's not what I mean. I think that is an empty, stupid sentiment. My reasoning is if they're in the military they probably have the self-discipline to consume alcohol more responsibly than your average 18, 19, or 20 yo. But it's not "you're old enough to serve your company so here, have a beer." That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.[/quote]

You're both saying the same thing. That is most people's point when they use that phrase -- if you're old enough to be counted on to serve your country responsibly in combat with a weapon, if you're considered old enough and wise enough to make a choice that could be as dangerous as enlisting in the military can be, if you're old enough to be trusted with the lives and safety of other soldiers in your unit... if you're old enough for those kinds of responsibilities and decisions then surely you're old enough to decide if you can or should have that drink.[/quote]
