The story about the black Yale student is a simple case of mistaken identity. This is not "walking while black". Please don't even try to say that it is, because the "walking while black" is a real problem for other non-Yale students. Trying to equate this lame story with "walking while black" trivializes the entire issue, and creates a strawman that deniers can easily knock over. To the PP who said his white son was stopped similarly for playing "hide and seek", I have a question. Was your son on someone else's property?
+1. That NYT column was a joke. The same thing happens to people of all races (and I know because it happened to me, and I am not black). The real root of the problem no one talks about is, why do statistics show that blacks are as a group, much more likely to commit violent crimes? Half of all murders in the US are committed by blacks, which account for only 10% of the population. Let's solve that first.
Most black people are not murderers. Let's remember that first.
+1
The quality of the discourse on this board makes me sad. One guy makes a red herring comment and another one gives it a +1.
Another PP here, but the "discourse" on issues of racism and sexism have been "sad" on this board for a long time. IMO, it stems from the fact that people on both sides either speak in widely accepted but never vierfied "talking points" or they tend to discount the other's persons POV because they have not experieced it (or have a different experience). Everybody wants to talk but no one wants to listen.
Evidence: in the most recent year with detailed stats (2011)... Blacks committed 5,486 murders Whites committed 4,739 murders This, despite the obvious fact that the white population is much larger. The conversation starts there. The rest are attempts to distract from that sad but real fact.
Why should it start there? Because you say so? I have said this before on this forum. Everyone focuses on the protests in Ferguson because that it what sell papers and generates clicks. And it is is a real issue. But AA's (including myself) are VERY active in dealing with other issues that AA's face. So...you think you are making a point by trotting out the tired and true "what about black on black crime?" At the same time you know nothing about the people trying to change some of these issues, some of the things being done, and, as the stats show, the resulting positive impact. Just because a certain segment is focusing on policing tactics, it does not mean that people are ignoring other issues. We can multi-task. But anytime you want to come with me to learn about some of things being done regarding crime, education and the like, let me know. You are welcome to come. I am game to have a discourse about almost any issue if you have an open mind and are willing to listen. But if are the type of White person who somehow thinks that you are qualified to tell AA's what our important issues are because you listen to some pundits and can trot out some stats, then I will pass. I will gain nothing from talking to you and you will gain nothing from me.
Wow, don't you love hearing your own voice. First problem...why do you assume I am white? (Not the case) Second problem...numbers speak louder than words. Why don't you find and share with us crime rates, controlling for SES, of white vs black vs Asian vs Latino vs illegal immigrant? You may be surprised
No thanks. I know the numbers better than you do (am in the field). However, discussing the issue with you is not worth my time. You are giving off the vibe that you do not have an open mind on the issue and you have already made up your mind. No need to waste either of our time.
