I like my DIL. I'm just starting to get to know her. She's been good for my son so far, and she makes him happy. She is a good mother to her kids from a previous marriage. She has an interesting, lively personality and is fun to talk to. I try hard never to step on her toes or give the impression that I'd judge her in any way. It's early days, but if she is what she seems, I will soon grow to love her. Hopefully I don't drive her too crazy in any way. My own MIL is another story. She probably likes me as a person, but she definitely hates me as a DIL. She has always wanted a DIL of her race and nationality, because in her country a DIL is a slave to the MIL. She also thinks her son would be happier with a servile woman to take care of him. She's tried to get her son to trade me in, and will probably try again. Her issues have put us through hell. She's okay as a person, but as a MIL she's a nightmare.
OP here. My MIL is american, and she is the same way! So old fashioned, my way or the highway, mostly from bitterness. Now we know what NOT to be. I commend you on your being secure with yourself enough to open your mind to another; and not be challenged by someone who is not cookie cutter of you.
