Locally owned business does not mean the mass market groceries and fast food joints referenced in the PH poster's suggestion. I would guess from the OP's context, she is referring to independently owned, boutique-style shops like those one will find in Arlington (clarendon and lee highway), city of falls church, and Vienna ... NOT that sprawling mess that is the Idylwood/Rte 7 disaster nor the "super Safeway" (hahaha) strip mall.
OMG, I'm sorry, walking through tiny residential streets with my 2yr old and picking flowers to go to Trader Joe's (without crossing any main road whatsoever, not even a traffic light) is such a "sprawling mess??" I don't even know what you are talking about. Maybe you mean if I were to walk to the shopping center on the other side of Rt 7 that has whole foods. I don't do that. Secondly, since when is Trader Joe's some mass market or fast food joint? Lots of people shop organic at Trader Joes. And if you were a REAL washingtonian, you would understand the value in Ledos (I'm born/raised on the first, original in Adelphi in the 70s). and crisp & juicy. These are not some national chain that was franchised here. These are local establishments. shit, these are freaking DC area meccas.
