OP, I'm another single mom. I'm not sure where you're living now, but do you have to live in the District? I just rented a two-bedroom, 1200-square foot unit with in-unit laundry at a condominium complex very near Tysons Corner mall, called the Colonies. Rent is about $1,600 a month plus utilities. Older community, but lots of amenities (swimming pool, fitness center, tot lot) and very safe. There are many in-home daycares in the area that would cost around $300 a week (some a little less, some a little more.) Most offer breakfast, lunch and snacks, which is a money saver. Centers would be around $1,500 a month for a 2 year old. The downside is that you would pretty much have to keep your car. There's no biking to work, unless you happen to work in Tysons. However, the McLean Silver Line station is opening sometime early next year and is within walking distance, so that's another commuting option for you, and you could limit your car driving to the weekends and extend your car's life. There are other big condo complexes in the area, and if you stalk Craigslist for them, you can find some good options. Also, as someone else mentioned, you could consider Silver Spring. I don't know that area as well but I know there are options there, and a friend has her sone in a home day care that charges $800 a month. I'm not going to bust your chops like other posters here, but now that you know student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy, you've got to start considering some other options. There are ways to reduce your expenses without sacrificing you and your child's safety. Good luck to you.
