I went to law school with a "Bud" because he was a II or a Jr. Instead of using the long formal name, he used Bud - as in Bud off the old plant/tree, i.e., the dad or uncle. Common name in the south. When he signed his full name, he added "("Bud")" in the center jur before the surname. Helped the family keep the two Charles straight.[/quote] It's short for buddy, not usually a proper nickname.
