4 pages and again the overwhelming question...does your kid want to go to college in a major city at a school with 10,000 undergrads or the middle of nowhere (some kids want middle of nowhere BTW) at a school with 2,000 undergrads. I don't even understand why they applied to both.
I don't know anyone as one-dimensional as you are describing. Do you take ONLY city vacations or ONLY mountain vacations? People can like both. OP already said the kid likes both locations for different reasons. Every year plenty of kids apply to both NYU and Cornell, or both Michigan and Caltech. It's not so hard to comprehend.
Vacations are a couple of weeks...not 4 years. If someone asked me where I wanted to vacation for 4 years, I would absolutely say I want LA or Miami because I want the city and the beach. See, that wasn't hard. Every year kids make kind of stupid decisions where to apply which aren't rooted in an honest assessment of what they want. Usually it's because prestige is the only common denominator. It happens a lot when kids shotgun the top schools and then are left with weird results.
