Dummy it was the opposite- Rocky's language was translated for us via Grace's computer. So we heard Grace talking and the translated Rockey back in English. The computer did the language. Nobody learned or tried to vocalize a different species' language. It's covered in the book too. Not really a way for them to organically do that....

In the book you absolutely know that Rocky's civilization is "smart" if not smarter. In the movie they did a pretty good job representing that. Rocky's ship was more advanced. Their capability on their home planet creating an "earth" (remember, this is a species that likes very high heat and ammoniac conditions!) is amazing. They also create organic food for Grace to eat, which is not in the movie! So calm down Patrice![/quote]

I didn't get the impression from the book that Rocky's civilization is smarter. More advanced in other directions, less advanced in others. If Rocky's civilization was smarter they would be familiar with radiation. That's the way most planets are heated on the surface. They know space is a vacuum, and sound isn't communicating energy from the sun to their planet. Records would indicate some sort of solar cycle, which a curious mind would question. Lord Kelvin wondered why our planet isn't a cold rock in space, leading to thermodynamics. Perhaps the Eridians lack curiousity.

Eridians don’t have eyes. Humans had an advantage of “ starting off” by naturally seeing the visible light spectrum and then making the intuitive and experimental jump to other forms of radiation. We learned about echolocation ( how eridians navigate ) by studying bats and whales. If Erid is so dark that no forms of life there see then it’s logical that Eridians may have never knew what that didn’t know regarding radiation.
