Days after being expelled from Beirut, Iran’s ambassador is refusing to leave, highlighting the Lebanese government’s weakness as the country once again becomes a battlefield for stronger powers.

Lebanon’s foreign ministry declared Ambassador Mohammad Reza Sheibani persona non grata last week and ordered him out of the country by Sunday. The government was upset that the Lebanese militia Hezbollah had triggered a new Israeli invasion of the country by launching attacks on Israel in support of its sponsors in Iran.

“It confirms that Iran and the IRGC are occupying forces in Lebanon,” said David Schenker, who served as the State Department’s top Middle East official in President Trump’s first term, referring to Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. “They dominate the country and do not recognize the sovereignty of the government of Lebanon.”
