Shouldn't these adults illegal or not being going to the alternative school why have them with minors
No. In the U.S. special education students and English language students can stay in school until 22 (well more like 21 but to be technical we will say 22). And there are many many many EL students who are good students and hard workers trying to get a diploma when they got here at age 16/17 and began school late and need more time. They should not automatically be shuffled to “the alternative school.”
This is why the budget for FCPS keeps growing even with declining enrollment. 20% of FCPS students are EL learners. 1 in 5. And many can’t even read or write in their primary language. FCPS can’t even afford alternative schools. Meanwhile these kids are a drag on everyone else.
PP here and this is harmful thinking. My school is majority EL and no, they are not a drag. They are great kids who are incredibly motivated to learn but have a lot of obstacles. We need to not demonize EL students because of this kid.
There is a wide range of EL learner status- levels 1-10 based on their assessments. Many just mived to the states or have no English exposure outside of school of have disabilities. They cannot read or write or speak English, and require significant support from the 1 gen ed teacher in the room. Some ELS (like level 6-7), are more fluent with lore comprehension and require less support.
Which is why we need a school specifically for ELA studetns who are not able to join their grade level classes. We are doing a disservice to the ELA students by placing them in an environment without proper supports. Having a dedicated school that pools all the resources needed to support these students would go a long way to helping them succeed. Instead we place Elemenatary aged kids with no English and no formal schooling into their age based grade level and claim that the immersion will be useful for them, so the kid is trying to lern a new language and catch up on schooling that they may not have received at the same time. We place teens in schools were they cannot interact with much of the student population due to language and education gaps and expect them to learn and not act our due to frustrations associated with moving, lack of a peer group, and frustration at not being ale to communicate with their peers. FCPS system is broken. It is more important to look right, high level of incluson and diversity, then to meet the needs of the students. So the ELA students struggle and there are impacts on learning in ES, as classes have to adjust to having a number of ELA learners in the regular classroom who need to be caught up on everything, and in MS/HS as kids who don't speak English and are years behind in education are frustrated, which impacts behavior.
