No. In the U.S. special education students and English language students can stay in school until 22 (well more like 21 but to be technical we will say 22). And there are many many many EL students who are good students and hard workers trying to get a diploma when they got here at age 16/17 and began school late and need more time. They should not automatically be shuffled to “the alternative school.” [/quote]

This is why the budget for FCPS keeps growing even with declining enrollment. 20% of FCPS students are EL learners. 1 in 5. And many can’t even read or write in their primary language. FCPS can’t even afford alternative schools. Meanwhile these kids are a drag on everyone else. [/quote]

PP here and this is harmful thinking. My school is majority EL and no, they are not a drag. They are great kids who are incredibly motivated to learn but have a lot of obstacles. We need to not demonize EL students because of this kid. [/quote]
