Why exactly do some families not like playdough?
Honestly, because you end up with a bunch of those tiny containers and just never use them.
I have celiac so we have a gluten free house- but am surprised that there's a widespread dislike of it!
No widespread dislike. Like all the other goodies, some people like it, and some people don't. You only end up with a lot of tiny containers if your kids don't use it. If they do use the play doh, the play doh eventually gets stiff and needs to be tossed and replaced. So families who don't use play doh often would see this as clutter, whereas families who do use it, would find the replacement playdoh useful. There is no universally liked goodie bag because all kids and families are different. Candy, books, mini activity books -everyone has their own view.
Most things will fall in a love it/hate it camp. I try to avoid clutter and anything that can make a mess. So playdoh is out as a favor for me.
