Clothing used to be a lot more expensive, so if you were going to invest in clothes, it was usually going to be nicer clothes that could be worn in multiple contexts. Read up on the history of the clothing industry. A shift occurred around the late 60s/70s, when the clothing industry was able to charge much less. But it took some time for that to really take hold across the country. [/quote]
