He certainly thinks that "...teaching people how to live well when they are surrounded by bad actors is good thing for society."  And I think you're also right in thinking that he hoped for something "better than religion" would come along to help us be better.   I think it's happening.   Slowly, good people are leaving religion.  That is the first step.

A much needed second, or even third or fourth step, is to change human nature so we aren't always looking for a reason to want to subjugate and harm other people.  Right now, religion plays that role.[/quote]
