Multiple genetics degrees here. Many people on this thread are discussing eye color as if it is a single gene trait like sickle cell or cystic fibrosis. It's much much much more complicated. Eye color is determined by many genes as well as probably some environmental factors. Obviously eye color of the parents plays into it and yes there is truth to the fact that brown is typically more dominant over blue, but as somebody said this is not like Gregor Mendel with the pea plants and punnet squares you all remember from high school.
Really not that complicated. Most people have difficulty telling the difference between truly blue (a bright blue color) and grey = blue plus the brown with dilution factor. One blue gene, one brown gene = green, which can appear as hazel, flecked, or a mix. Many people have difficulties describing colors. There are also many different shades of brown, but they are all on a spectrum. Hair color more difficult! Violet eyes = so little pigment that the red in back of the eye shows. Can be a little creepy.
