A 79 year grandmother would immediately be eligible for Medicaid coverage (free health insurance) in states like CA, MN, IL, NY, OR because the state subsidizes the immigrants for the 5 years wait.

The elderly immigrant is eligible for Supplemental Social Security if aged 65+ which is a cash payment of up to $994. Some states don't make elderly immigrants wait and provide cash payments such as CA - The California Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) is a cash assistance program for non-citizens who are either aged, blind or disabled who do not qualify for SSI solely due to immigration status.

Let's say you are a minimum wage worker who retires at 65. The estimated payment according to a GOV calculator for regular social security is $1,186. BUT this person would have to pay Medicare for Part B coverage. Gov website indicates For someone who retired at 65 with an annual income of $45,000, your Medicare costs (based on 2026 figures) would likely be $0 per month for Part A and the standard premium of $202.90 per month for Part B plus prescription benefits of about $32. So deduct that from the social security amount.

It does not make sense someone who has worked for so many years gets less than an elderly immigrant. This is why most other developed countries do NOT let elderly immigrate. They can come on visas for extended stays instead. [/quote]
