I think the wife likely enabled a lot of unhealthiness in that home and she has to deal with the grief of the loss that came with it. But at the end of the day, he is the only one responsible for his daughter's death. This wasn't a forgot a child in the back of the car like so many of the others. This is intentionally leaving a child in the back of a car on a very hot day, and doing so despite it having been an issue before.
She’s codependent. If you read their texts, it’s the classic addict/codependent relationship - where she would call him out, he would pout “I guess I suck! I’ll just leave!”, she caves and reassures him he doesn’t suck. Then he would do the bare minimum to keep her around, like attend a meeting or promise to start running again, she stays because she thinks there’s hope. However, she is also responsible. Maybe not as much, but she is. She knew this was a problem and didn’t do anything. It’s like a mom intentionally taking their child into a dangerous part of town knowing their child would likely get hurt - if their child gets hurt, yes it’s the perpetrators fault, but also, mom should not have been taking them there. It’s negligent.
