My vote might come down to this - last year, the VA legislature voted to get rid of the college tuition waiver for 100% disabled veterans, Gold Star families, and the families of fallen law enforcement and first responders. My local Democratic legislators were immovable and did not care; they wanted to use the money to provide financial aid for immigrants (yes, really). Youngkin and Earle-Sears intervened to save it. I am relying on it and don’t trust it will continue to exist if Spanberger is elected.
No. This is a state funded program and OOS families were applying for it to attend Virginia public colleges. It’s not a federal program. The program was also extended for any higher ed, not just undergraduate. So the money RAN out in a few short years because word got around with veterans in other states that their kids could also qualify for Virginia’s program if they attended a Virginia public university. This is why we can’t have nice things. Because it was abused by OOS people. It’s not federally funded. Why should my tax dollars go to pay the tuition of a kid from California or Texas or Iowa to go to UVA or VCU or George Mason under this program. The program as it is now is not sustainable. What was proposed was 1) each applicant must exhaust financial aid options (like fill out a FASFA and apply for federal student aid, is that too much to ask), 2) only fund undergrad, and 3) be for Virginia resident kids. Seriously, stop making up propaganda. Get your own state to start a similar program. All the money budgeted for our program is now gone.
