No one has mentioned yet that this contractor took 6 WEEKS to finish floors???? That is unbelievable! He should've been able to replace your floors in a week.
OP here. Right. Actually it is a big job, and the new guy we will be hiring expects it take 3 weeks total (including ripping out most of what the other guy did.) But yeah, one of our issues with this guy was how it took him much longer than he contracted (and in the end, we found out he didn't even do it correctly.) We wondered if he worked more than 5 hours a day if he would have finished faster? Many years ago I worked for a construction company (secretary type work) and I know our crews would generally work 7 am-4 pm. It really surprised me that this guy was rolling in close to 9 am and then leaving in the early afternoon.
Well then stop being a cheapo and hire a better contractor. And as others have noted, if you've got mental anxiety from the thought of another person using their toilet while working in your home, get a portapotty.
He wasn't "cheapo." He was actually the highest priced of the bids we sought.
Well, then clearly you didn't get high quality bids or solicit any references if all the work had to be redone. I show my contractors where the toilet is, offer them sodas from my refrigerator and buy them pizza for lunch at least one day if they're on-site for more than a week. If you pay people a fair price and treat people well, you wouldn't be having these problems with the quality of work. But since you're fixated on the contractor's use of the toilet rather than the fact that you paid him for work that has to be redone, I guess that shows the level of focus that you're capable of.
He certainly did not deserve pizza.
He did deserve a toilet.
