Last month, the National Cancer Insitute confirmed through their own study that 1 shot is as effective as 2. This was following up on a 2022 study out of Kenya that also showed 1 was sufficient. The WHO recommends one shot. If I had a daughter with autoimmune issues, I'd err on the side of one shot rather than two or three.
Oh interesting! See, this is why I come to DCUM. I feel that a lot of doctors are not up-to-date on these things. I will bring this up to my daughter‘s doctor. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INFORMATION. -OP
Sad. Your actual doctor will probably tell you that the NCI has NOT changed their recommendations, although they are tracking ongoing research. And there are nuances not captured by "is as effective," because the study population is limited to younger teens or preteens. PP also missed the mark on the WHO recommendations. The WHO acknowledges a "comparable" efficacy and durability of protection, but that doesn't mean it is the same. They are promoting considering a one-dose regimen in order to "improve access to the vaccine, offering countries the opportunity to expand the number of girls who can be vaccinated and alleviating the burden of the often complicated and costly follow-up required to complete the vaccination series. It’s vital that countries strengthen their HPV vaccination programmes, expedite implementation and reverse the declines in coverage. " But they are promoting it as an OPTION. They would not still include a second dose if useless.
WHO now recommends: A one or two-dose schedule for girls aged 9-14 years A one or two-dose schedule for girls and women aged 15-20 years Two doses with a 6-month interval for women older than 21 years https://www.who.int/news/item/20-12-2022-WHO-updates-recommendations-on-HPV-vaccination-schedule
