OP, I definitely get where you're coming from. I have the unfortunate privilege of being a Berkeley alum, so every time someone mentions my alma mater on here, it is resoundingly negative; even though, they somehow believe that these large class issues disappear for UVA and other public institutions. I've also had the humorous experience of being yelled at on this thread that a certain tiny Liberal arts college has better research access than Caltech. If there were better forums for California parents, I'd honestly get on them even though I live in the DMV, because the takes on Californian institutions are so bizarrely wrong here.
. Berkeley is almost twice a big as UVA.
Agreed. Poster has reading comprehension issues. 1) No publics rival the top private unis and SLACs for undergrad unless paying in-state tuition. 2) As far as publics go, for undergrad, yes, UVA is better than Berkeley. But it is a silly comparison. Obviously, if you are in-state, go to your in state school. If you are not in-state, see #1 above — go private or SLAC, because it is simply not worth the oos tuition (especially UVA) or the housing/treated like herded cattle hassle (Berkeley). 3) For undergrad, Berkeley is not even the top public California school, as California kids are voting UCLA with their feet.
