Are the teaching positions unionized? I know in DC charters most are not.
Yes. Members are part of MCEA. There needs to be an updated MOU to cover whatever programmatic differences there are at MBLI, but they haven’t started negotiating that yet. This is part of why MCEA sent the caution to teachers in April.
Gotcha. So teachers are unionized but may not have the same salary/conditions as those who pro for MCPS?
Correct, so if they're asked to stay after their duty day for this daily aftercare MBLI said they were going to have, they would need an MOU to determine compensation and wouldn't be able to file grievances in line with it
What have MCPS teachers negotiated for all the work they do after the duty day?
Nothing financially - but they are not obligated to do any work in the building after the duty day by their administrators, whereas the MBLI is explicitly saying they are asking teachers to stay after school to facilitate an after care program.
MBLI is starting with MS. Why do they need an after-care program?
Many MCPS Middle Schools have Excel Beyond the Bell, which is offered at: Argyle Roberto Clemente Forest Oak Francis Scott Key A. Mario Loiederman Montgomery Village Neelsville Odessa Shannon It is typically installed at MSes with significant FARMS rates, as those kids typically have working parents who aren't home from work when school lets out. Afterschool programming helps prevent adolescent kids from getting into trouble outside of school by strengthening their ties to the school in a fun, engaging and productive way. Given who MBLI is trying to serve, I imagine they're trying to accomplish the same thing with their aftercare mandate.
I want us to be clear on the difference between after care and extra-curricular activities or tutoring. After care is essentially daycare. MS doesn't need daycare those kids can go home by themselves. Extra curricular activities and tutoring make for a more well rounded kid and has academic benefit.
Low income kids often live in neighborhoods that are unsafe for them to walk home through. Some of my students are in shared housing and it isn’t safe for them to even stay at home without a parent. One of my students sits in McDonald’s during her mom’s shifts.
