HHI 1.5M, NW maybe 5M, late 30s Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Paige, Joie, Boden, Equipment, Theory, Rag and Bone, Alala, Alo, Splendid Also occasionally Rue la la, Off Saks, Nordstrom Rack I’m surprised by the answers here and wondering if there are a lot of posters who don’t usually frequent Beauty and Fashion? For Dcum I expected a lot more answers like mine and instead everyone is so frugal! Clothing is definitely my guilty pleasure.
A few years ago, my answer would have been more like yours when I was late 30s, though even then I tended to shop on sale. (Our HHI is now ~$1M, and it was probably $700K back then.) Nowadays I mostly shop consignment + staples from lower end or discount/outlet stores of the major department stores (Nordstrom Rack, Off 5th Saks). I wear a lot of the same brands as you, though. I don't tend to be particularly trendy and wear clothes for years, so buying last season's Rag & Bone t-shirt from the outlet is NBD to me. I was raised UMC with a mindset of "what is something worth" vs. "what I can afford"...and I was a grad student for a long time. I don't see the need to pay more to end up looking the same. It's also the case that I'm a petite size, so buying in store is hard since they often don't have my size.
I totally appreciate that it’s a bit silly to pay more to look the same, and there are plenty of people who spend WAY WAY less than I do and look ten times better! But shopping is so darn fun. Reading this thread almost makes me feel guilty at how much I spend but it’s the shopping itself that is the hobby, not so much the owning or wearing of the clothes. I suppose I might feel differently when I get older though - right now I’m at the nexus of having a healthy amount of money and still being young enough to be fashionable, but I can see myself settling into a more basic, classic wardrobe when I’m in my late 40s.
I'm in my 50s. I'm never going basic. My mom is in her 80s and never leaves the house without looking fabulous.
