Unfortunately, there needs to be a junk food ban in schools. 1/3 kids are overweight and 20% are obese. Unless very drastic action is taken this public crisis will continue to get worse.
Kids aren’t fat because of a cupcake at school. Come on.
It isn’t “just one” cupcake at school. It’s 30 kids on a class all bringing in special treats for their birthday, the valentine party, the xmas party, the Halloween, party, candy as prizes for games, pizza days for good behavior or whatever, plus daily crappy breakfast and lunch schools gives out. Schools are passing out junk food literally all the time
Let’s say that it takes 15 min to pass out cupcakes, eat them, and clean up. 15*30=450. 450 min = 7.5 hours. 7.5 h is equivalent to more than one full day of classroom instruction. Not to mention the disruption of stopping class early, adding cupcake duty to the teacher’s workload, etc. I don’t care about the sugar or nutrition, but taking 2-3 min to wish a kid a happy birthday in class without cupcakes vs taking up classroom time seems like a much better use of time. For the kids and the teacher.
